THE VAL D'ORCIA
Today Val d’Orcia is a land fresh and unspoiled where the character of its agricultural economy, the persistence of its inhabitants to work the earth, and the natural materials found in the area, have safeguarded the relationship between man and the environment.
The scenery of the Val d’Orcia begins with a symmetry of natural harmony with its rolling hills, and then changes into the majestic grandeur of the Amiata, a mountain abounding with springs of crystal clear water and luxuriant vegetation.
The solitude, the empty spaces, the light, the views, invoke a sense of pleasure and delight.
The farming community of the Val d’Orcia has never surrendered to progress, it has always welcomed travellers and pilgrims and always made them welcome.
The valley has recently been declared a UNESCO world heritage.
The presence of christian communities in this valley dates back to the 5th century, as many country churches (“Pievi”) were located along the old Roman roads. The church of Santa Maria dello Spino, which nowadays belongs to the Gonzi family and lies just 2 km. from Le Fontanelle, is one of the most important little churches of the valley. It remained abandoned until the 80s, when the family has completely restored it and given it a new life. This church can be used for wedding celebrations or for any other particular occasion.
